The top 5 strongest alcoholic drinks in the world

Are you the type of person who likes to nonchalantly down hard liquor without breaking a sweat? If so, read on for five hellish drinks that are guaranteed to get the job done quickly. Here’s the lowdown on the strongest drinks currently on sale at bars around the world – drinks with such a high ABV (alcohol per volume) that pack such a punch, you could easily be on the floor after a few sips.

1. Bacardi 75.5% ABV

Bacardi is a white rum from Cuba made from distilling molasses, sugar and water and is one of the most popular rum brands in the world.

How to drink?

You can drink it straight from a shot glass but Bacardi is used as the base for numerous delicious cocktails such as the Mojito or the Daiquiri. However, many feel that the classic pairing of Bacardi and Coca-Cola with plenty of ice is one that’s hard to beat.

2. Balkan 176 vodka 88% ABV

Imported from Bulgaria, this triple distilled vodka is the strongest vodka that can be legally purchased in the UK. Supplied in a bottle with 13 different health warnings, it’s not for the faint-hearted. You only need a small amount of it and the strong spirit smell will blow you away if you aren’t expecting it. However, this hand-crafted vodka is actually very smooth and deserves its reputation as a good-quality drink.

How to drink

With extreme caution. Mix a tiny amount to make cocktails or add water to appreciate the subtle vodka flavour.

3. Absinthe 89.9% ABV

Absinthe, also known as the Green Fairy, is a strong spirit by any standards and is famous for its hallucinogenic properties; Oscar Wilde reportedly saw tulips growing up his legs after sampling the tipple. Associated with Bohemian fin de siecle Paris, absinthe contains thujone which is a compound of wormwood and which was long thought to cause hallucinations. However, science has never found any evidence that it has anything to do with said hallucinations although it is certainly toxic at high doses. Slightly disappointingly for hipsters, absinthe is now legal and as safe as any other spirit when drunk responsibly. Just make sure you buy it from a bar or a shop not some guy down a back alley.

How to drink?

Purists insist that the only way to drink absinthe is to dilute it with chilled water which is poured over a spoon containing a cube of sugar into the glass.

4. Everclear – 95% ABV

Made from corn, Everclear is such a potent drink that it is illegal in many states, including California, where pretty much anything goes. Many places refuse to sell it to those under the age of 25 so make sure you have some valid ID. Manufacturers, Luxco, describe the drink as an ingredient that needs to be diluted before consumption. This is an understatement.

How to drink?

Mix it with plenty of juice. Drinking it neat will make your throat burn as if you’ve swilled battery acid.

5. Spirytus Rektyfikowany – 96% ABV

Experts have issued warnings about this Polish spirit after YouTube videos have emerged featuring people drinking it neat, swigging it from the bottle and even setting it alight. Do not leave it in the house if you have teenagers prone to Jackass-style stunts.

How to drink

Dilute it with water and it’s a great quality vodka. Use it for making fruit punches or for embracing your Polish cultural heritage.

When it comes to these drinks and all other types of strong alcohol, make sure you read the labels and drink responsibly.
